A Message from AAC’s Board

Dear AAC Family,

Today, we write to you with transparency as we navigate a period of transition and reflection within the organization.

In recent months, the Arts Administrators of Color Network has undergone internal assessments aimed at ensuring that we remain true to our mission of supporting and empowering BIPOC artists, arts leaders, and organizations. The Board has made a difficult decision that, in order to ensure the sustainability of the organization and remain true to that mission, we must part ways with our Executive Director, amidst other ongoing decisions around staffing structure, programming, and finances. While we appreciate the contributions of our former Executive Director, it has become evident that change in leadership is necessary to better meet the needs of our community.

AAC is at a critical moment in its evolution and continues to learn through the challenges and opportunities organizational growth bring. This decision was not made lightly and has included thoughtful reflection on how we arrived at this moment and the ways we can better ensure that deeper collaboration leads to organizational success.

The Board will begin the work to recalibrate and align the needs of our community with critical next steps to ensure our organization can address those needs for as long as those needs exist.

We are taking concrete steps to engage in restorative practices (internally and externally) to meet this moment:

Internally:

  • We are initiating a process of healing amidst such a significant transition within our organization by providing spaces for staff, board members, and volunteers to express concerns and aspirations for the future.

  • We are conducting a review of our policies, practices, and culture to identify areas for improvement, reinforce what works well, and ensure that our values are present in all that we do.

  • We are actively imagining what new leadership will look like, prioritizing a proven track record of collaborative and sustainable leadership.

Externally:

  • We will be reaching out to our constituents to listen, learn, and strengthen relationships based on trust, transparency, and mutual respect.

  • We will continue to gather input and feedback from our community, ensuring that your voices are heard as we shape our future direction.

  • We are standing strong in our commitment to serve through meaningful programming, partnerships, and advocacy that reflect the richness of our collective experiences.

This moment is a humbling one, full of valuable lessons to be learned. In order to meet our mission, we must take these necessary steps and move with thoughtful intention towards sustainability.

Interim leadership will be provided by the Board of Directors. We will be programming virtually through this transition. We’ll provide updates as soon as possible.

You may have questions or ideas for how we can better serve you and we invite you to connect with us in whatever way feels comfortable. Your input will be invaluable as we chart a path forward.

Thank you for your continued support, grace, and dedication.

In solidarity and community,

Arts Administrators of Color Network Board of Directors
